The Miracle Woman (1931)
Anyone interested in seeing a female version of Elmer Gantry? You can rent The Miracle Woman if you want to, but you’re better off sticking with Burt Lancaster. Barbara Stanwyck’s talents, though many, just don’t lie in preaching. She has several lengthy pulpit speeches, as well as off-stage emotional outbursts, and she’s just terrible. If you’d never seen her before this movie, you’d think she was a stinky actress.
The most amusing part of the film is seeing Sam Hardy, the spitting image of Burt Lancaster thirty years before he took the movie on. Sam’s accent, large features, mannerisms, patter of speech, and energy are all identical to Burt’s, and it’s very funny to watch.
Most of this movie is pretty hokey and overdone, since we’ve seen similar movies in modern years, like Elmer Gantry and Leap of Faith, but by the end, the final scenes will make you tear up despite your best efforts. David Manners, who plays a blind man who believes in Barbara Stanwyck’s fake sermons, is extremely sweet and manages to turn a melodrama into something palatable.
