The Night Walker (1964)
Twelve years after their very nasty divorce, Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor made another movie together. It was her last theatrical movie before she transitioned to strictly television, and after you watch it, there’s no question as to why. The only question is why she agreed to make it in the first place.
Barbara is married to Hayden Rorke, and they have a terrible marriage. She has very vivid dreams of a young man romancing her, but after Hayden’s death in an explosion, her dreams take a terrifying turn. Bob is the family lawyer who finds himself attracted to his friend’s widow; talk about awkward. Lloyd Bochner plays the dream lover, and his scenes are an odd combination of creepy and ridiculous. And finally, poor Barbara isn’t given anything to do besides look pretty and scream her head off. In the later part of her career, I wonder if she regretted making Sorry, Wrong Number, a role she was forced to repeat for fifteen years. I did watch this movie all the way through, but I just felt so sorry for her. So many talented silver screen actresses were reduced to play hysterical messes in 1960s horror flicks, and unfortunately, she was one of them.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. There are several times throughout this movie where the camera tilts or spins, and during the wedding scene, several dizzying techniques are used will make you sick. In other words, “Don’t Look, Mom!”
