The Outlaw (1943)
The Outlaw is famous for introducing Jane Russell to the world. Tons of publicity went into Jane’s assets, and director and producer Howard Hughes was so obsessed with them he designed a bra to best show them off. Jane had the last laugh, though. After all his work, she lied and ended up wearing her regular bra! As you can tell from the movie, or the publicity photos, she didn’t need any help.
In case anyone’s paying attention to the story, it’s about Doc Holliday’s relationship with Billy the Kid. It’s ironic that Walter Huston was one of the go-to actors in old Hollywood to play a straight-laced, honorable character, when he gave wonderful performances in roles that allowed him to let his hair down. In The Outlaw, Walter plays Doc Holliday, starting the movie off perturbed about his stolen horse and on the side of the local sheriff, Thomas Mitchell. As he gradually gets to know Jack Buetel, his loyalties shift. The rest of the film shows the ups and downs of their friendship, but I don’t know if anyone understood that. When asked about the plot, I’m pretty sure any audience member would say, “That’s the movie where Jane Russell’s in the hayloft, right?”
The Outlaw is actually a pretty good western, if you’re able to realize it is one, rather than just a giant pin-up picture of Jane Russell. Those of you who like classic westerns will definitely want to check this one out.
