The Shining Hour (1938)
The Shining Hour was based off a Broadway play, and as this wordy, emotional, slightly over-the-top drama unfolds, everything will make much more sense if you keep in mind that it was originally intended for theater audiences.
Joan Crawford stars as a low-class, but high-integrity, woman who falls in love with the wealthy Melvyn Douglas. Melvyn’s family disapprove, and after his brother Robert Young tries to talk sense into him, he marries Joan. Joan really doesn’t get along with her new family and finds a particular enemy with her sister-in-law Fay Bainter. Robert’s wife Margaret Sullavan tries to be nice, but it doesn’t last. Add in a love triangle, lots of arguments, and an epic confrontation, and that’s The Shining Hour in a nutshell.
This movie really isn’t my favorite, only because it’s too theatrical for my taste. Fay Bainter is her typically smug, irritating self, and while it’s entertaining to watch Joan hold her own, Margaret’s pseudo niceness is so obnoxious it makes it impossible to feel sorry for her later on. For a far better movie starring a low-class Joan Crawford trying to claw her way up in society, rent Mannequin, released in the same year.
