The Tall Men (1955)
In The Tall Men, which was surprisingly one of the top box office hits of 1955, Jane Russell finds herself in a very juicy love triangle. To her left, she’s got Clark Gable, a cowboy on the run from the law, and to her right is Robert Ryan: rich, handsome, classy, and a perfect gentleman. Robert gives up his suite at a hotel for her, then purchases an entire wardrobe to show her what it’s like to live the fine life. He wines and dines her, and doesn’t lay a finger on her or hint that she owes him payment for his luxuries! Clark is rough and seeks out fights instead of resolutions. “I haven’t had my breakfast yet,” he says before grabbing her and giving her a huge smack-a-roo. If you find yourself torn between the two, rent The Tall Men to see who Jane picks.
The film mostly takes place during a cattle drive, and some of the script is pretty unrealistic. Jane parades around half-naked and sings in her bathtub, but it doesn’t occur to her to try and be a little more careful around dozens of cowboys. Stranded in a cabin overnight with Clark Gable during a snowstorm, Jane starts a fire right in the middle of the room—and with no chimney or hole in the roof, the room stays miraculously smoke-free the entire night. But, if you don’t care about details, you might not criticize this one as much as I did. I’m also not a Cameron Mitchell fan, and he plays the extremely annoying, no-good brother of Clark Gable. It’s not his fault he kept getting cast in villainous roles, but he could have stopped playing them so convincingly so the offers might dwindle.
