Three Blind Mice (1938)
Loretta Young and her two sisters are poor chicken farmers who want to move up in the world. They collect an inheritance, and rather than invest it, save it, or buy a house in another area, they choose to invest it in their eldest sister’s powers of seduction. The plan: Loretta Young will pretend she’s a wealthy woman, attract a millionaire husband, and then spread the wealth around to her family. What’s a girl to do when two millionaires, Joel McCrea and David Niven, are crazy about her?
Nothing can compare to The Girl from Missouri, but this movie is every bit as cute as How to Marry a Millionaire and The Palm Beach Story, other comedies with the same basic plot. In fact, the script was based off the same play that Marilyn Monroe’s classic was based on. And the bonus to this silver screen gem: the boring, annoying bits from How to Marry a Millionaire were cut out! Three Blind Mice is adorable and hilarious. The actors all work well off each other, and the plot is very cute. I don’t usually like Loretta Young, but even she is delightful in this romantic comedy. With some familiar faces like Stuart Erwin, Marjorie Weaver, Pauline Moore, Binnie Barnes, and Jane Darwell, this will be a classic you’ll want to watch over and over again!
