Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)
Even though Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? has become a cult classic over recent years and inspired the miniseries Feud, and even though it was a box-office hit at the time, I think it’s safe to say that everyone who watches it realizes it’s bad. If it’s a favorite of anyone’s, it’s a “guilty pleasure” or only enjoyed because it’s so campy and terrible. It’s not a favorite of mine, but since I have enjoyed other films simply because they were terrible, I understand others’ feelings about it.
Famous rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are pitted against one another in this campy horror flick from the early ’60s. Given what we know about their history, I don’t see why either would agree to act in this movie, but I didn’t understand why Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins agreed to face off in Old Acquaintance with their off-stage history. Bette plays a former child actress turned recluse who’s manipulated by her sister Joan. I was always partial to Bette in earlier decades, and it always breaks my heart to see her in her overdone makeup, screeching and overacting in the terrible horror movies she made in the 1960s. Joan’s role isn’t as humiliating, since all she has to do is play a manipulative villainess, much like her character in Harriet Craig.
If this is your genre of choice, you’ll want to watch one of the early “classics”. If you were mesmerized by Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon in Feud, you’ll obviously want to watch the original film. If you prefer to see these silver screen legends where they belong, stick to their earlier films before they were reduced to this.
