Witness to Murder (1954)
If you want to see Barbara Stanwyck in Sorry, Wrong Number and George Sanders in All About Eve without having to rent both of them, you can watch Witness to Murder instead! Barbara sees George strangle a woman in the apartment across the way, but he’s such a cool, collected character, the police don’t believe her. So, while she’s screaming her head off and having emotional outbursts, George hides his villainy with polish and charm. Sound familiar?
If it sounds extra familiar, you might be confusing this movie with Rear Window, which came out in theaters within a month of Witness to Murder but was infinitely better received. I couldn’t stand Rear Window, so even though Barbara Stanwyck’s extremely similar version is a bit melodramatic and obvious, I liked it better. James Stewart’s handicap was his wheelchair, and hers was her gender. Women in the 1950s were treated as victims of hysteria instead of serious witnesses, according to this movie.
For some serious camp, with lots of screams, over-the-top music, and character mistakes that will make you shout at the screen, you can’t get any better than Witness to Murder. Rent it with Rear Window to see which one you like better!
