Wrong Turn, Right Direction
by Elle Casey
Wrong Turn, Right Direction is the fourth book in a series of romantic comedies that can be read in any order. I liked the earlier books the best, and while the third book wasn’t really my cup of tea, I really didn’t like this last book. The heroine starts the first chapter by giving birth, and she claimed not to have known she was pregnant. I know you hear stories about this all the time, but it’s more likely that these girls are refusing to accept that they are pregnant than they just didn’t notice they were putting on a little extra weight.
Her stupidity aside, the main character just isn’t likable or relatable for me. She meets a man who helps her give birth then pretty much uproots his entire life to help keep her safe and give her a fresh start at life, but in every single scene, she goes through a mental monologue about how she can’t trust men and should run away rather than get attached. Her baby’s father is a notorious mobster, and the man she meets is a member of a private security business; can’t she put aside her trust issues and just say, “Thank you”? Also, the entire book deals with an inept woman trying to adjust to motherhood, a subject matter I try to avoid like the plague. If I wasn’t interested in finishing the series, I probably wouldn’t have finished this book.
All in all, I really did enjoy reading this series, and I’d certainly try another Elle Casey book. She’s funny and quick, and creates varied, interesting characters in an exciting world.
