10 (1979)
I knew 10 was going to be silly, but I didn’t think it would disgust me. After reading the backstage trivia and learning that Blake Edwards was inspired to make the film after he himself saw and followed a beautiful woman on the way to her wedding. How many movies did he have to make that expressed his middle-aged dissatisfaction? And why did he always have to cast his beautiful, talented, classy wife in the role of the long-suffering woman whom the protagonist doesn’t want and treats like furniture? Perhaps if someone else had made the movie (and not cast his beautiful wife as the “undesirable”), I would have found it funnier. Instead, I was filled with pity for Julie Andrews.
She plays second fiddle (literally) to Dudley Moore, a famous songwriter and composer who refuses to commit to her and instead wallows away in self-indulgent frustration. He drinks to excess and impulsively follows Bo Derek around after seeing her in a car dressed in her wedding gown. As if that isn’t sick enough, he also follows her to Mexico when she goes on her honeymoon! I do love Dudley Moore, and parts of the movie were funny (and I did appreciate the unintended humor of Brian Dennehy playing the bartender twenty years before he was paired with Bo in Tommy Boy). But I do wish Blake Edwards could have gotten some therapy to conquer his midlife crisis. And speaking of therapy, he was considering casting his own daughter in the Bo Derek role – how sick can you get?
