36 Hours (1964)
I was never one to rave about Rod Taylor, and I didn’t really think much of his movies past 101 Dalmatians and The Birds, but I hadn’t yet seen 36 Hours. What an incredible movie! Full of suspense and detail from start to finish, it’s one of the most underrated movies of the 1960s.
James Garner stars as a devoted American soldier in WWII. He knows intimate details about the upcoming invasion of Normandy, and the Germans are aware of his importance. So, they kidnap him with an ingenious plan of how to get the military secrets out of him. I won’t tell you what the plan is, but it’s very inventive and brilliant.
Jimmy gives a wonderful performance as he’s put through the ringer, and Eva Marie Saint has really improved since her On the Waterfront days, but it’s Rod who steals the show. He has three different characters to embody as the movie progresses, and he’s 100% present at every moment. He has high energy that buoys the film up, and he’s so convincing and passionate, the audience is actually torn between rooting for him and Jimmy. Taking home Rag awards for Supporting Actor and Dramatic Screenplay, this movie is not to be missed. I realize I haven’t given you much to go on, but trust me, it’s fantastic.
