A Blueprint for Murder (1953)
Yes, A Blueprint for Murder is just a regular noir, but somehow everything pulls together to really put you at the edge of your seat. It could have been Dana Andrews and Linda Darnell in the leads, and the movie would have been just as good, but with Joseph Cotten and Jean Peters, they do everything they need to to convince you they’re really in their roles. Jean plays a doting stepmother to two little children. Her husband died recently of mysterious circumstances, and at the start of the movie, the little girl is rushed to the hospital with a mysterious attack of agony. Joe is Jean’s brother-in-law, and when he tells the family’s plight to a couple of friends, Gary Merrill and his wife Catherine McLeod, Catherine gets an idea in her head: if Jean’s husband left his fortune to his children, Jean would have to get rid of them to get the money herself!
Of course, it’s preposterous to even entertain such an idea! But once the seed of doubt is planted, it’s impossible to get rid of. Joe, Gary, and Catherine go into detective mode without letting Jean know they’re onto her. But is she even guilty? She seems so sincere. And if romantic feelings start clouding his judgment, will he drop the whole matter?
Jean Peters shows off her sensational figure in Charles Le Maire’s beautiful dresses – some of which make you wonder how they made it past the censors. Is she really a bad girl? The great thing about Jean is that, even though she didn’t make many movies, she was always different in each role. You won’t know until the end if she’s evil or if Joe is paranoid. But it’ll be a lot of fun trying to figure it out!
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, since the premise involves trying to poison a child, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
