A Christmas Carol: The Musical (2004)
I remember all the hype leading up to “Fraser’s Christmas Carol”, as well as all the watch parties that were hosted in town. My family had a few friends over, brought out the Christmas cookies, and willingly sat through all the commercial breaks to experience the Alan Menken and Lynn Ahrens musical. Nobody I know actually enjoyed it, but it was still fun to prepare for it.
The opening sequence was very impressive, but the rest of the songs and what the writers did to the story fell pretty flat. With Kelsey Grammar playing Ebenezer Scrooge, the sky was the limit, so it’s really too bad the material wasn’t better.
In the supporting cast, Jennifer Love Hewitt played Belle, randomly re-named Emily in this version. The three ghosts were Jane Krakowski, Jesse L. Martin, and Geraldine Chaplin; and Jason Alexander played Jacob Marley. It’s obvious why everyone tuned into NBC to watch it live, with such a tempting cast. And there are a couple of pretty songs, but it’s really not worth making an annual tradition out of it.
