A Farewell to Arms (1932)
While I prefer the 1957 remake of Ernest Hemingway’s famous novel, there are some good reasons to check out the 1932 original. Gary Cooper is extremely young, and you can get a good idea of why the tall cutie pie became so famous early on. Helen Hayes is also extremely young, and if you only remember her as little old Miss Marple, you won’t even recognize her. She’s cute as a button and very pretty! My mom said she couldn’t imagine Helen Hayes being pretty, so I had to show her this movie.
If you don’t know the story, it’s a war romance set during the Great War. Gary is an American ambulance driver, and Helen is a British nurse. They’re both stationed in Italy, and amidst the bombs and blood, they fall in love. Adolphe Menjou plays Gary’s Italian sidekick who encourages him to follow his heart, so if you’re a fan of his, you’ll enjoy seeing him in this against-type role.
I like the 1957 version better because Jennifer Jones is one of my favorite actresses, and because it’s much more of a lush romance filmed in the golden age in Technicolor. Helen Hayes is really adorable in this one, though. Gary is his usual confused self, as if he’s struggling to remember his lines, so if you really don’t like him, you’ll probably like Rock Hudson better.
