A Foreign Affair (1948)
This Billy Wilder drama manages to poke fun at Germans and Americans, perhaps in an attempt to help post-war relations by saying, “Neither of us have our act together.” Jean Arthur stars as an American investigator sent to Germany by Washington. Her mission is to track down and prove Marlene Dietrich was a high-level Nazi officer’s mistress. If so, Marlene’s a threat and needs to be arrested. However, Jean is inept and unprofessional (as you might guess). And, there’s also John Lund, an American Jean assumes is on her side because of his nationality. Turns out, John is on Marlene’s side because he’s her boyfriend! He tries to trick and distract Jean from her task.
Since I’m not a Jean Arthur or Marlene Dietrich fan, I’m not really the target audience to enjoy the movie. I also find Billy Wilder movies to be too clever and proud of themselves, sometimes. If you like the cast, you can give it a shot. I just can’t stand Jean Arthur’s incompetent antics; I found myself hoping for her to get fired rather than to get the guy.
