A Simple Twist of Fate (1994)
In the middle of Steve Martin’s King-of-Remakes streak, and after the glorious success of his modern take on Cyrano de Bergerac, he made a modern version of Silas Marner in the form of A Simple Twist of Fate. If you really loved reading that book in school, you’ll probably want to rent this movie, but if you didn’t like the story, you won’t like the modern take. In my opinion, the story itself just isn’t interesting. I’m not a sucker for children, so whenever a story centers on motherhood or fatherhood, I’m generally not interested.
Steve Martin stars as the recluse who gets his life turned upside down by a baby left on his doorstep. His heart softens and he legally adopts the little girl. They love each other, they learn from each other, they make memories and form a life together—and then the rest of the story happens and ruins everything. Where there’s conflict, there’s plot, as the saying goes. Gabriel Byrne and his wife Laura Linney take an interest in the little girl and threaten to completely ruin both father and daughter’s lives. I’m just not a fan of the Silas Marner story, so the modern take on it isn’t my favorite. Steve Martin has made over a dozen remakes, so the next time I’m in the mood for one, I’ll rent one of the others.
