A Very Special Favor (1967)
What a cute movie! I hope Leslie Caron had a good sense of humor, because when her onscreen father Charles Boyer tried to sell her assets to Rock Hudson, he describes her as having, “an animated face…exceptional teeth…not the type of woman with large hips and overdeveloped bosoms that is so distasteful.” Rock sees right through it and quips back, “She’s a skinny, flat-chested girl with buckteeth. And so far you’ve only been talking about her good points.” I love Leslie and think she’s cute-as-a-button, but it’s still a funny scene. Stanley Shapiro and Nate Monaster’s script is a riot-fest with a laugh a minute. It’s quick, features enough dirty jokes to send Will Hays of the former Production Code into a conniption fit, and features enough realism within the fantasy to make the audience roll their eyes knowingly. While confiding into Rock his marital troubles, Charles relates a story during which he was enjoying dinner until his wife ruined it. Rock correctly guesses that Charles’s wife ruined the dinner by showing up and catching him out with another woman. How did he know? “You said you were enjoying dinner, didn’t you?”
If this quick-witted, slightly cynical sense of humor appeals to you, you’ll love this movie. Yes, it’s a bit dated, but if you’re renting a 1965 romantic comedy, I think you know what you’re getting into. Leslie Caron plays a therapist, and since she’s a strong, unmarried career woman, her father thinks there’s something wrong with her. He ropes Rock Hudson into doing what’s perfected throughout his movies: lying to get a woman into bed. Charles hopes that a love affair with a playboy will loosen Leslie up and show her the error of her ways. Yes, it’s a very special favor all right. It’s also a very funny movie. Perfect for girls’ night with cocktails!
