Adorable Sinner/Katia (1959)
In this lush French romance, two German actors play Russians – and it’s not a comedy! It’s a period piece that’s beautiful to look at with lovely costumes and beautiful sets. Curd plays Tsar Alexander II, and if you know your Russian history (kudos to you if you do) then you’ll know how this story will play out. This is definitely a drama. Before you start thinking Curd is pedophile, just remember this is based on a true story. Alexander II really did start a relationship with Katia when she was a schoolgirl.
I was anxious to see this movie because I knew the two leads had an affair, and since Curd usually gives smoldering looks to his costars, I thought the sparks flying might have left burn marks on the film. If anyone else practiced their French to follow the story (as there is no subtitled version available), they might be disappointed in the lack of chemistry shown between Curd and Romy Schneider. According to the internet (a very reliable source, you know), their affair was in 1957, but this movie was filmed in 1959. That might explain it. . .
In any case, Adorable Sinner was entertaining for me to watch. I got to test my French comprehension, and a well-done period piece always gains my appreciation. Plus, there was enough eye candy to last me a month. Curd looked so handsome in his royal costumes, it’s almost funny director Robert Siodmak bothered to film the screenplay instead of just a bunch of wardrobe tests and love scene rehearsals.
