Affair in Trinidad (1952)
If you loved Gilda and want to see another movie that’s very similar to it, check out Affair in Trinidad. It’s a noir set in an exotic locale, and Glenn Ford has to resist his attraction for Rita Hayworth, a nightclub singer he believes to be promiscuous and bad news. She sings and dances to a song that can actually be sung at the same time as “Put the Blame on Mame” without anyone noticing any discord. She flips her hair, shimmies around in a strapless dress, and gives her open-mouthed grin that was patented before Marilyn Monroe showed up and took over.
Since I didn’t really like Gilda, this wasn’t my favorite movie. I appreciated the basic plot of a man dying under mysterious circumstances and the “bereaved” widow working with the police to find the murderer, but the supporting cast’s acting left much to be desired. Alexander Scourby was just a one-dimensional villain, and Valerie Bettis’s drunk scenes seemed to be straight out of community theater. Juanita Moore wasn’t given anything to do except be a loyal, wise servant. Glenn and Rita were fine, although they weren’t doing anything they hadn’t done before. It’s a harmless movie that won’t hurt you to sit through, but don’t expect anything fantastic.
