After the Thin Man (1936)
In another fun-loving romp with Nick and Nora Charles (and Asta), this second installment of the Thin Man series centers on a family problem. While visiting his unwelcoming in-laws, William Powell comes across a family dispute. Myrna Loy’s cousin, Elissa Landi, has a ne’er do well husband. He’s run away and left her, and she wants Bill to find him and bring him back. Along the way, they meet a host of questionable characters, banter, and drink a lot. The end of the movie has a really cute surprise that changes the family dynamic of the rest of the series.
The most memorable part of the movie is James Stewart. It’s before he’s really made it as a movie star, and the type of character he plays in this movie doesn’t get repeated very often once he becomes a household name. I’ll never forget the scene when he cries and bites his knuckles – a very powerful mannerism repeated in the prayer scene of It’s a Wonderful Life ten years later. The only trouble is that I (and everyone else in the world) saw the Christmas classic first and thought James Stewart’s acting was phenomenal. To see the very thing I loved in a movie ten years earlier is a little disappointing.
