Airport 1975 (1974)
I’m a definite fan of the Airport franchise, but without a doubt, the weakest installment is the second movie. The best part is, of course, George Kennedy, who has a couple of touching scenes with his wife, a passenger on the doomed aircraft. The worst part is, of course, what was spoofed in the subsequent Airplane! movie: having a stewardess fly the airplane. It’s not Karen Black’s fault, for she did everything she was supposed to do, but it was just ludicrous. I don’t care how great Charlton Heston’s instructions to her were, a ditzy stewardess who doesn’t know what any of the buttons and levers mean would never be able to just stand-in for a pilot.
Still, if you’re having a marathon, you really do need to watch all four movies. As usual, there’s a large supporting cast and a little old lady you can worry about and hope gets out alive. Myrna Loy is frail but not much else, as she has very little character development. Helen Reddy, Efram Zimbalist Jr., Roy Thinnes, Sid Caesar, Norman Fell, Nancy Olson, Jerry Stiller, and Martha Scott, round out the passengers. Linda Blair is a sickly little girl in need of an organ transplant (also spoofed in Airplane!), and Dana Andrews plays a pilot in another plane – it’s about time someone gave him a role in another flying movie, since he was the original pilot in the movie the Zucker brothers spoofed.
Don’t get discouraged by this one; the third movie is excellent. It’ll be fun to laugh at when the plot twists become too far-fetched, and when you recognize the moments that have been spoofed.
