All I Want for Christmas (1991)
Sometimes Christmas stories, though still cute, have a bit of a sad premise to get them started. All I Want for Christmas centers on a group of kids who hope to get their divorced parents back together again. The movie was made in 1991, so you’re going to have to remember what divorce meant back then. It wasn’t a go-to option for parents to put their happiness first and figure that their kids will bounce back since all other kids have divorced parents as well. Back in 1991, the same era as Mrs. Doubtfire, the term “broken family” was a sadness that wasn’t acted upon without great consideration.
So, this Christmas movie is pretty cute, but at the time, it probably brought a pall of sadness upon some viewers. Children Ethan Randall and Thora Birch ask Santa (Leslie Nielson) to help them their parents back together, but instead of waiting, they decide to take matters into their own hands. It might not be what their parents (Harley Jane Kozak and Jamey Sheridan) have in mind – or their grandmother, Lauren Bacall – but the little kids can’t be stopped. From one clever and funny scheme to the next, the kids steal the show and the audiences’ heart. For those with an intact family, this is a great holiday comedy. Those who are part of a broken family might not find it so charming. I’ve enjoyed it a few times and have always found it to be very cute.
