All of Me (1984)
All of Me is one of the funniest movies ever, and remarkably, even in today’s touchy social culture, it’s still hilarious. Granted, if it were made today instead of in 1984, it would be different, but that’s one of the great things about it: it’s not gratuitously gross, there are no graphic sex scenes, and there aren’t any jokes that go too far.
Before The Hot Chick, and before In Your Eyes, there was All of Me. Chronically and terminally ill Lily Tomlin has a plan to reincarnate her soul in someone else’s healthy body after she dies, so she wills her millions of dollars to the poor but loyal Victoria Tennant and summons a spiritual guru, Richard Libertini, to her deathbed. There’s a mishap during the transfer, and instead of Lily entering Victoria’s body, she wakes up in Steve Martin’s body! As they battle out control over their shared body, the audience is left in stitches. Steve and Lily argue incessantly through both inner monologue and with Steve talking through—literally—both sides of his mouth. Re-learning how to walk and getting into a slapping fight with himself are just the beginning. Just imagine how difficult it is when he has to go to the bathroom! “If you don’t give Big Ed some air, he’s gonna piss all over your side of my body!” Steve hisses into the bathroom mirror.
If you’re a Steve Martin fan, this movie is probably one of your favorites. He’s in his comedic prime, juggling physical comedy with witty repartee like it’s easy. His comic sparring with Lily is perfect, so if you’re a Lily Tomlin fan, you’re going to want to check this adorable movie out. She doesn’t disappear after she dies, since she talks inside Steve’s head constantly and can be seen whenever he looks in the mirror. She looks so pretty in this movie! I know Victoria Tennant is supposed to be the romantic lead, but Lily’s awfully pretty, and her personality is much cuter, too.
This classic ’80s gender-bender comedy is really cute. There’s a laugh a minute, and the fast pace will have you wishing it would last longer. Full of quotable lines like, “Back in bowl,” and “He had a darn good reason,” this will quickly become your go-to comedy when you’ve had a hard week and want to relax.
