American Madness (1932)
What an exciting movie! Passed by the Hays Code before it was mandatory, Frank Capra’s production gives Walter Huston an audition for playing both Al Stevenson in The Best Years of Our Lives and George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life. If you like those—and who doesn’t?—check out this early ’30s drama.
Walter Huston stars as a man who runs his bank with his heart instead of a calculator. He knows his employees by name, takes an interest in their personal problems, and gives loans to men he knows have a stake in the community and will pay them back, even if on paper it doesn’t look like it. However, the members of the board are determined to kick him out of power. During the same day that he gets pummeled by the board, his bank gets robbed and his wife turns to another man.
With another wonderful performance by Walter Huston, an interesting script, and realistic tension throughout the film, this one isn’t to be missed. Check it out!
