...And God Created Woman/Et Dieu… créa la femme (1956)
The opening scene of Roger Vadim’s French classic shows Brigitte Bardot sunbathing nude in her backyard. Remember how the first shot of Lost in Translation was just a closeup of Scarlett Johansson’s pink panties? Well, Brigitte isn’t wearing panties. Then, older, wiser, studly Curd Jurgens drives up to her house and struts over to where Brigitte lays behind the clothesline. She stands to greet him, and you can tell from his expression that the sheets billowing in the wind provide very little barrier to his view.
That’s pretty much all you need to know about …And God Created Woman. Her husband and director Roger Vadim wanted to show audiences worldwide how wonderful her body was – for ninety minutes. She was constantly being exploited, whether in outfits so tight she had to have been sewn into them, explicit dancing, a hip-shaking walk that put Halle Berry to shame, or being passed from man to man, even in the same family.
There’s a scene where the three men, Curd, Christian Marquand, and his younger brother Jean-Louis Trintignant, discuss the situation calmly. Because Brigitte is too provocative and slutty, her guardian has decided to kick her out of town and return her to the orphanage; her only hope to stay is to get married. “One of us has to sacrifice his freedom so she may keep hers,” Curd deduces. She doesn’t have any say in the matter, but instead willingly goes to bed with the chosen “loser”. While being a wife (which, to her means spending money, going to bed constantly, and flirting with the other two men who still want her), there’s very little to the story besides letting the audience ogle Brigitte and envy the men who get to fondle and kiss her on the screen.
This is a classic movie, and it’s still sexy even by modern standards. If you want to see why Brigitte became an instant success, you can rent it, but it’s not really a movie of high quality. It has one purpose, and the purpose is seen in the first scene. I only sat through it to find out if she’d end up with Curd, one of the few actors whose sex appeal equaled hers. Remember in 2005, he was voted #2 in a German magazine’s list of sexiest actors ever. I wonder who beat him out in the top slot.
