Andy Hardy's Double Life (1942)
Would you believe it, I finally found an Andy Hardy movie that was pretty good? I haven’t been watching the series in order, and Andy Hardy’s Double Life is only the third or fourth I’ve seen. In this one, Mickey Rooney is still girl-crazy, but he’s not nearly as goofy as in the earlier pictures. He’s about to leave for college, and while he doesn’t want to get tied down by being Ann Rutherford’s steady beau, he does want her to write him steamy letters so he can be popular among his peers. His sister, Cecilia Parker, gives him advice on how to get a girl to cool off and stop hinting at marriage, but when Mickey goes over to Ann’s house intending to cool her off, he winds up getting himself heavily involved with both Ann and her college friend Esther Williams! It’s Esther’s first flick, and she gets one swimming pool scene, but most of the movie finds her fully clothed and walking instead of dancing. Mickey is putty in any girl’s hand, and he winds up becoming both girls’ boyfriend—hence his double life.
In a side plot that’s more interesting than the main one, the Hardy family gets ready for their soon-to-be empty nest. Lewis Stone is excited to accompany his son to his alma mater and recapture some of his youthful feelings. Mickey doesn’t want to be embarrassed by having his dad hold his hand on the first day of school, but he doesn’t know how to tell Lew to back off without hurting his feelings. When they finally have one of their famous man-to-man talks, it’s really moving. Even Sara Haden, the spinster aunt, gets a sweet goodbye scene, when she doesn’t normally get much to do. This Andy Hardy movie might have to do with juggling two girls, but it also has to do with juggling the transition between boyhood and manhood, and that part of the movie is very good.
