Angel Falls - A Novel Holiday (2019)
As a fan of Chesapeake Shores, I looked forward to seeing Carlo Marks in Angel Falls – A Novel Holiday. He returns to his hometown to briefly take over his parents’ estate, but he finds unexpected reasons to stay. One, his childhood friend, Jen Lilley, captures his eye (although it’s clear from the way he looks at her, he’s had a crush on her for years). Two, there’s a celebrated author, Rachael Crawford, renting out his house and in dire need of Christmas spirit. She’s depressed, and Carlo and Jen make it their mission to cheer her up.
I did appreciate Carlo’s performance as he spoke in a very natural delivery and put in some endearing, and far from saccharine, expressions, but he just couldn’t save the rest of the movie. Eric Close costars as a very un-angel-like guardian angel, serving out platitudes with every breath. Jen Liley is extremely unlikable, as she has had zero character development in the past ten years. She admits to jumping to conclusions and holding a grudge against Carlo for ten years. He was completely innocent, and once she realizes she was wrong, she vows to be more mature in the future. However, at the very next opportunity, she jumps to conclusions again and reverts to fighting dirty!
All in all, I wouldn’t really recommend this one unless David was your favorite character in Chesapeake Shores. One bonus for me was getting to see Laura Miyata in another “supportive best friend” role, as I watch her every year in 12 Dates of Christmas.
