Angel on My Shoulder (1946)
In the grand tradition of “What happens after you die?” movies in the 1940s, Angel on My Shoulder joins the ranks of Heaven Can Wait, A Guy Named Joe, A Matter of Life and Death, and Here Comes Mr. Jordan. The premise is very interesting, and as usual Paul Muni gives a wonderful performance, but it’s not the best of the above-mentioned bunch.
Fans of Paul Muni in Scarface will love him in this role, as a tough-talking gangster out for revenge. At the start of the film, he gets released from prison, but on the drive back to town, his crony Hardie Albright shoots and kills him. Paul gets sent to Hell, where he unknowingly makes a deal with the devil, Claude Rains. Claude is after a pure judge’s soul, and he promises Paul that if he returns to Earth and inhabits the judge’s body, he can get revenge on Hardie. Fans of Claude as the immortal Mr. Jordan will love seeing a very similar performance. I hope Claude had fun, playing a head angel and the devil himself in the span of five years!
Of course, complications in Claude’s master plan ensue once Paul meets the judge’s sweet fiancé, Anne Baxter, and starts to fall in love. As rough and tough as Paul is, he’s touched by the respectable life he could have had if he’d made different choices in his life. What will happen next? You’ll have to watch this movie to find out. Just a word of caution: don’t get your hopes up about the story. If, like me, you think it might be more complicated, dumb down your expectations.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. When Paul enters and leaves Hell in the beginning of the movie, the background has flashy movement and that will make you sick. In other words, “Don’t Look, Mom!”
