Angels in the Outfield (1951)
What a cute movie! I’m a big Paul Douglas fan, so it appealed to me to watch this one first before renting the remake. Paul plays a loud-mouthed, blowhard baseball manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He loses his temper, gets into fist fights, treats his players badly, and uses such foul language the Hollywood censors would have had a field day had the sound department not blurred his words together. A cute and perky reporter, Janet Leigh, writes an unflattering article about his abrasive personality, but still that doesn’t make him change his way. What does? An angel, of course.
In exchange for better, nicer, cleaner behavior, the angel promises Paul he’ll improve his team’s performance. They’re in last place, so the bargain is appealing. Everyone knows Paul is a big softie at heart, so you know you’re in for a good time to see him turn nice and sweet.
If you’ve seen too many dramas lately, or you’re in the mood for a heartwarming piece of fluff amidst all the grit present in today’s movies, Angels in the Outfield is the perfect movie to rent. It has a great supporting cast, from Spring Byington and Ellen Corby as baseball-loving nuns, to Keenan Wynn as the smarmy villain, to Lewis Stone as the friendly baseball commissioner, to Barbara Billingsley as a hat check girl. You’ll even see cameos by Joe DiMaggio, Ty Cobb, and Bing Crosby. I don’t usually like Janet Leigh, but her character was so adorable, I couldn’t help but root for her. She gets caught in a rainstorm and asks Paul to dry out her shoes near the oven; when he accidentally melts them beyond repair, he has to carry her outside to a waiting taxi, and she lies about how much she weighs. Paul is always great, and it’s really too bad he had such a short career. If you’ve never seen him before, this is a great one to start with. He’s such a sweetheart!
