Another Thin Man (1939)
In the second sequel to the wildly popular The Thin Man, Nick and Nora Charles have a little baby son, but that doesn’t derail them from getting into trouble and solving mysteries. Nick’s boss is afraid someone is trying to murder him, and while they stay with him for the weekend, they try to protect him. It’s no easy task when “accidents” keep happening. There’s even an upsetting murder early on in the movie: a dog (not Asta!) gets killed. I found that unnecessarily dark, and if you’re watching this old flick with kids, you might want to warn them.
I did enjoy seeing all the familiar faces in the supporting cast, including Sheldon Leonard as a menacing gangster (what else?), Harry Bellaver as a “reformed” crook, Otto Kruger, Patric Knowles, Virginia Grey, Ruth Hussey, Nat Pendleton, and C. Aubrey Smith as Bill’s boss who fears for his life. As usual, there’s the fantastic marital banter between Bill and Myrna. She may stay in the background most of the time, but she knows how to let him have it when the time is right. In my favorite moment of the film, they’ve finished a long day and are getting ready for bed. Myrna hands her husband his pajamas, and he gives a little pout. It’s only for a second, but it’s hilarious.
Even though it did have that one dark moment towards the start, the rest of this one was pretty enjoyable. The supporting characters were all entertaining and brought their own energies to the screen. Since this one had the introduction of the Charles’s baby, and the happy couple kept calling each other “Mommy” and “Father”, which was pretty cute. There was even a baby birthday party, where a bunch of crooks and gangsters showed up with their babies to help Nick and Nora celebrate!
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to an upsetting scene with an animal, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
