Anywhere But Here (1999)
If you liked the mother-daughter dynamic of Gilmore Girls, you’ll probably really like Anywhere But Here. I’m not a big fan of mothers treating their daughters like friends. Motherhood is a huge responsibility. The indie flick Laggies sums up what happens if you try to be your daughter’s pal: “I thought I’d be the really cool mom that took her to concerts, and she’d want to borrow my boots. But then one day I realized there’s no such thing as a cool mom. That the cool mom is really just the bad mom, or the mom who has become a joke.”
Those who disagree and wish they had the quipping, sarcastic, surface, playful type of relationship with their mom: Anywhere But Here is the perfect matinee flick for you. Susan Sarandon is flighty and makes her teen daughter Natalie Portman move across the country with her. In Los Angeles, Natalie isn’t too happy, and they both have adjustments to make – all while quipping, laughing, arguing, and ultimately loving each other. Next up, try Ladybird if you like this style.
