Astaire Dancing
by John Mueller
For the ultimate Fred Astaire fan, or the moviegoer who is also a reader and a dancer, this is an incredible book. In the large coffee table book, John Mueller separates every Fred Astaire movie, and discusses the technicalities of his dancing. And by technicality, I don’t mean with words alone; most of the book is comprised of still shots of Fred mid-leap or mid-twirl. A film strip of pictures stretches across the page, detailing out a dance step in millisecond increments. Mueller must really have loved Fred, and whoever reads this book must really love him as well. If you’re not interested in that type of detail, there are many more books for you to choose from. But for that guy or girl who watched Swing Time a hundred times to try and learn Fred’s routines, this book is for you.
It’s a very large hardcover book, and would be an excellent statement piece on your coffee table. If you’re hoping to learn about his life or to analyze his career, this isn’t the book to buy. For detailed pictures and step-by-step dancing techniques, try to find a copy at your local used bookstore.
