Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
What’s better than Austin Powers having to adjust from the 1960s to the modern 1990s? Forcing him to go back and re-adjust to his former life all over again! In the second installment of the Austin Powers movies, Mike Myers starts off perfectly happy in 1999 with his beautiful wife Elizabeth Hurley. But when she turns out to be a Fembot, and Dr. Evil goes back in time to 1969 to steal Austin’s mojo before he can become a threat, there’s no rest for the secret agent. Most of the original cast returns for this movie, including Robert Wagner, Seth Green, Clint Howard, Mindy Sterling, Will Ferrell, and Michael York; and in the new 1960s world there are some new faces: Heather Graham, Rob Lowe, Kristen Johnston, and Verne Troyer. There are also some cute cameos in the modern era by Woody Harrelson, Tim Robbins, Burt Bacharach, Elvis Costello, Rebecca Romijn Stamos, Jennifer Coolidge, Willie Nelson, Jerry Springer, and Fred Willard.
There are so many adorable moments that are just as funny the twentieth time as they were the first. I love when Austin’s teeth revert to their old 1969 alignment and crack the mirror. Once again, Michael York plays the hilarious and perfectly named Basil Exposition, and he gets to say one of the movie’s best lines while explaining time travel. I always split my sides laughing when he breaks the fourth wall and tells the audience, “That goes for you, too.” Although modern audiences probably won’t allow themselves to laugh at the Fat Bastard character, everyone who went to the theaters in 1999 remembers laughing until it hurt. With musical numbers, pop culture references that make the ’90s kids in the audience feel special, and a loving tribute to the silly 1960s era, these movies are not to be missed. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen them, invite your friends for a marathon.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. During the “swingin’ sixties” scene transitions, the camera zooms in and out quickly, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
