Away from the Dark
by Aleatha Romig
Picking up right where Into the Light left off, we complete the journey of the young woman abducted into a cult because she was digging too close to the truth and ready to publish her findings in a newspaper. Her memory was wiped and she was trained to believe women were subservient and deserved punishment to help them learn from their mistakes. When her memory comes back to her, she feels betrayed and distant from the man she believed was her husband. Understandably! And it’s equally understandable that she would want to reunite with her old boyfriend, who spent the first book worried about her and waiting for her return.
Unfortunately, the conclusion to the incredibly riveting first book was a bit of a letdown. It felt forced, as if the author believed she had written herself into a corner and had no choice, or she felt pressured by her publishing house to steer her characters in directions that the first book hadn’t indicated. I’m always inclined to cut authors slack, since I know they aren’t always given as much freedom as they’d like. The path Away from the Dark took wasn’t to my liking, but I still appreciate the action, suspense, romantic tension, and imagination it took to write it. Read this two-part-er and see what you think!
