Beat the Devil (1953)
Humphrey Bogart, in another John Huston “trenchcoat” movie, explores his lighter side in Beat the Devil, a movie originally intended to spoof the famous The Maltese Falcon. He stars as a variance of his normal tough cookie, and while he has an entourage of crooked cronies, Robert Morley, Peter Lorre, Ivor Barnard, and Marco Tulli, they’re not as successful as they try to be. Humph is married to Gina Lollobrigida, in her introduction to American audiences, but his eye gets caught by the intriguing Jennifer Jones. Both beautiful woman want him; what’s a guy to do?
Well, if you’re able to figure out what he does, you’re a better man than I. I found this movie just as confusing as the other types of movie it was spoofing. With double-crosses, backstabbing schemes, and quick dialogue, it’s not hard to find yourself momentarily lost. I wasn’t able to get back on track, but I did notice the sparkling chemistry between Jonesy and Humph. She’s blonde in this one, which is a nice change, and the movie is not a harrowing drama where people are either depressed or dying, which is also a nice change for her. If you’re a fan of the cast, check it out. If you’re in the mood for something simpler, try The African Queen instead.
