Bedazzled (1967)
Famed duo Dudley Moore and Peter Cook wrote and starred in the satirical dark comedy Bedazzled. It follows the age-old temptation of selling one’s soul to the devil, but with a dry, British twist. Yes, there was a remake in the 1990s, but that was truly awful. Stick with the original to appreciate the concept behind the story.
Dudley has his heart set on Eleanor Bron, but he’s shy and can’t seem to make his move. He’s approached by the devil in human form (Peter) and is granted seven wishes, seven chances to win her over. In little vignettes, he learns to be very careful with what he wishes for, as Peter twists his words and puts him in the worst situations imaginable. In between the alternate universes (being famous, being rich, etc) Dudley and Peter have philosophical talks about life and God. Their dialogue is very witty and stands the test of time for any modern agnostic or atheist. Parts of the movie are silly and obviously from 1967, but most of it is very good, so rent it for dry, British retro night.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. During the vignette in which Dudley is transformed into a fly, the camera films with a fishbowl type of POV, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
