Behold a Pale Horse (1964)
If you’re hoping for another The Guns of Navarone with this movie, the similarity stops with the cast. Yes, Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn are reunited, but the plot and execution of this movie is far from suspenseful. Greg plays a former Spanish revolutionary who’s been in hiding for twenty years. He’s finally decided to cross the border, but when head military guard Tony gets wind of it, he sends his army out to find and stop him.
It’s supposed to be a cat-and-mouse tense drama, but I didn’t find myself invested in either character. This isn’t really my genre of choice; I just watched it for the cast. To me, it didn’t make sense for Greg to be the lead, since he’s notorious for not doing accents when the part requires it. Anthony Quinn is the one who can put on a Spanish accent! Omar Sharif takes the third lead, as a well-intentioned priest who tries to do the right thing but is easy to manipulate. Growing up, I’d only ever really seen him in Funny Girl, but now, the more I see his movies the more I’m impressed by his talent. He has very kind, peaceful expressions in this film, just as you’d expect from a priest.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. About five minutes before the end, when Gregory Peck looks up at the staircase, the camera does a huge spinning swirl that will make you very sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
