Between Two Worlds (1944)
Between Two Worlds is a fascinating story that was very daring to make in 1944. In the midst of the Production Code, it wasn’t acceptable for the hero of the story commit suicide. Heroes had to be admirable, bad guys had to be punished, and the wages of sin were death. But what happens if a movie starts with Paul Henreid killing himself, followed by his young, beautiful, dutiful wife Eleanor Parker, killing herself as well?
The answer is a moral mind-bending story where both leads wind up in limbo and have to face their lives. In the film, limbo is shown as a cruise ship sailing over water so foggy it’s impossible to see where it’s going. It’s symbolic and makes perfect sense. John Garfield, Denis King, George Tobias, Sara Allgood, Faye Emerson, and George Coulouris are – literally – on the same boat. Edmund Gwenn is the ship’s steward who knows that they are in limbo, even when many of the passengers do not. It’s pretty creepy, that the people don’t understand what has happened to them.
Obviously the story explores everyone’s backstories and how they ended up between two worlds. This is pretty dark for 1944, but not by today’s standards. Don’t expect a psychologically disturbing drama that will stick with you for years, but just appreciate the heavy subject matter for the time period.
