Beyond the Forest (1949)
In this old melodrama, a woman puts her own wants and desires above everyone else’s. She doesn’t care about the propriety of her small town, her husband’s feelings, or the consequences of her actions. She chases after another man, setting everyone’s lives into a tailspin.
Who plays the brazen hussy? Believe it or not, Bette Davis. She wears a long, very fake looking dark wig to make it more believable she has “irrepressible passions” (oh, Hollywood!), and she really hams up her slutty demeanor. One nice thing she might have appreciated though was the chance to show off her figure. She didn’t often play sex symbols, but she did get to wear low-cut, clingy dresses in Beyond the Forest. And there is one line that got immortalized (through Elizabeth Taylor’s imitation) from this film: “What a dump!” If you’re dying to watch the movie that originated that line, look no further.
Obviously, Jennifer Jones was busy making Madame Bovary. Linda Darnell was busy with Slattery’s Hurricane, A Letter to Three Wives, and Everybody Does It. Dorothy Lamour was busy filming Manhandled. But why couldn’t Hollywood wait? Why did Bette Davis have to put on a garish long black wig and act like a harlot? This was not a role for her, but it didn’t seem to hurt her career. The next year, she landed All About Eve. You can skip this one and pretend she took the year off. If you’re watching it for Joseph Cotten, this isn’t an exceptional part for him. He plays the neglected husband, and you can find him in many other everyman roles.
