Black Widow (1954)
What an interesting premise! If you’re in the mood for a super soapy, All About Eve-esque drama, rent Black Widow. Set in the theatrical world, it follows a Broadway producer who gets involved with a young aspiring writer. Van Heflin takes the lead, and it’s nice to see him in a different role: successful, but still a soft touch. He’s in love with his beautiful, sweet wife, Gene Tierney, but when she leaves to care for her mother, he can’t resist the seemingly innocent advances of young Peggy Ann Garner. It’s a little unsettling to see Peggy Ann so grown up, coming on to a married man, when she made her fame as a child actress in the previous decade. She’s far too young to know about things like affairs and blackmail! Still, her enthusiasm for the theater appeals to Van and he mentors her, but it seems like much more to observers. His pals Ginger Rogers and Reginald Gardiner, the primadonna in his show and her husband, think there’s more than a little hero worship going on.
Why does this movie have such an ominous title? It is a tense thriller, though I don’t think the title itself is very fitting. All About Eve gets turned on its ear, with the twists and turns of the plot. Gene Tierney fans might be disappointed since she doesn’t have much screen time, and Ginger Roger fans might wonder why she received top billing when she doesn’t have much screen time either, but Van Heflin fans will be pleased. It’s fun to see him in a nice, soapy thriller. Next up, check him out in Woman’s World!
