Blonde Venus (1932)
Anyone want to see Herbert Marshall as a cuckold husband, two years before he won a Rag award for playing a cuckold husband? If you liked him in The Painted Veil, check him out in Blonde Venus. He’s ill, from being exposed to radiation, and to raise enough money for his life-saving medical treatment, his wife Marlene Dietrich sells herself to the highest bidder.
It’s not quite that melodramatic, but it is that dramatic. Before they were married, Marlene was a nightclub singer, and very free with herself. We see how much of a brazen hussy she was, courtesy of a flashback, so it really shouldn’t be a surprise that she returns to that line of work. She soon learns that the nightclub business has changed in the past few years; some of the lucky girls get sugar daddies if they give an impressive performance. In an early role, Cary Grant plays her suitor, whom she attracts after performing a ridiculous song in an ape suit – I’m not kidding. But, if Cary Grant wants to give you money to be his mistress, will you say no? She doesn’t either.
This is a typical role for Marlene, so if you like her, you’ll be happy. The story itself isn’t very strong, and both men have done better, so make sure you like the leading lady before renting it. Keep your eyes open for Dickie Moore, who plays their young son, Hattie McDaniel who plays Helen’s maid, and Sterling Holloway, also known as the voice of Winnie the Pooh.
