Boomerang (1992)
Because it was Eddie Murphy’s time as Star of the Week on Hot Toasty Rag, I rented one of his earlier movies: Boomerang. I had never seen it before, and now that I’ve sat through it, I know why. It’s so nasty! I really wasn’t prepared, especially because it was made in 1992, before the internet inspired Hollywood to become more explicit.
My mom said, “Boomerang is so funny!” but I couldn’t find it in my heart to laugh half as often as she did. It’s simply a matter of age (and I don’t mean to call Eddie Murphy “old” at all!): my mom remembers his raunchy stand-up routines, and I associate him with Disney movies. So, while she was laughing her head off watching him act as the ultimate playboy, I was hiding my very red face behind a pillow. “But that’s Daddy Day Care!” I said. “I don’t want to see him in bedroom scenes!”
If you’re had your heart broken by a cad and have wished that what came around went around, you’ll probably really like the plot of this naughty comedy. You’ll get to see an elderly Eartha Kitt making an absolute fool of herself, and you’ll get to see a pre-famous, pre-dolled up Halle Berry. She doesn’t play the pretty one, but instead the drop-dead gorgeous Robin Givens is the irresistible one. If your heart goes out to David Alan Grier, as mine did, you probably won’t be very happy with the ending. But, if you don’t always think of Eddie Murphy as a father figure, you’ll probably enjoy it. I still wouldn’t recommend watching it with your parents, though.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to graphic sex scenes and language, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
