Bowfinger (1999)
In the grand tradition of movies about making movies, Bowfinger takes a new spin on the genre. Steve Martin is a small-time director looking to make a movie starring the famous star Eddie Murphy, but Eddie refuses to be in such a low-budget flick. However, Steve runs into a bit of luck and meets Eddie’s look-a-like. With careful camera angles, he’s able to make his movie pretending that the real Eddie is his star.
Yes, it’s always fun to see Eddie Murphy in a movie where he plays more than one part, but this isn’t my favorite of his movies, nor is it my favorite Steve Martin movie. It’s a little too silly for my taste, and anyone who knows how movies are made knows it’s not very realistic. Heather Graham plays a caricature of her usual roles as a slutty, vapid actress, and Robert Downey, Jr. is a studio producer only interested in box office figures. It won’t hurt you to rent this movie, but it might not become your go-to on Saturday night.
