Brigadoon (1954)
Brigadoon isn’t usually a musical you hear talked about unless you’re a theatre buff, and the sole reason for that is Gene Kelly’s film adaptation. He turned it into a dance vehicle for himself and Cyd Charisse, rather than staying faithful to the stage version. Several songs were cut, in favor of just lengthy dance numbers (and not the exciting kind), so most people avoid it when watching old movie musicals. Think about it: you’re more apt to choose Oklahoma!, Gigi, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, or even the oft-forgotten Carousel before remembering about Brigadoon, aren’t you?
If you do rent it, chances are you’re either going to be bored to tears or disappointed. Gene and his pal Van Johnson are hiking around in Scotland and they come across a magical land that only appears to mortals once a year. They enter the land, meet the locals, and fall in love. It could have been so much better than it was, especially with an interesting premise. There have been a couple of television remakes, but no one has been brave enough to really revamp the musical Hollywood-style. Just try and imagine the possibilities if Rob Marshall grabbed ahold of it.
Of course, there are a few people out there who will love it. If your least favorite parts of musicals are the songs, and you love Cyd Charisse, you’ll adore it. I’ve never been a fan of hers, so I found it very hard to root for her as Fiona. Van Johnson doesn’t add anything to the movie, and Gene Kelly seems far too consumed with himself to worry about what the audience thinks.
