Bring It On (2000)
“Awesome! Oh wow! Like, totally freak me out; I mean, right on! [Clap, clap] ’Cause Toros sure are Number One.”
Is there any millennial who doesn’t immediately start clapping on the beat and finishing the cheer from Bring It On? I’m such a huge fan, whenever anyone comments on the chilliness of the weather, I break out into, “Brr! It’s cold in here! There must be some Clovers in the atmosphere.” I’m such a huge fan, the first time I watched my new DVD copy, I immediately restarted the film when the end credits rolled. This is one of those iconic teen flicks that gave all girls something to aspire to, and gives the adult women who never achieved those goals a common bond: we can all quote Bring It On.
Kirsten Dunst is as cute as it gets – or even cuter. Is there anyone else who could have played the team cheer captain so delightfully? Gabrielle Union is also excellent as the rival captain, with a very understandable chip on her shoulder. It might not have been Kirsten who did her wrong, but we get why she’s distrustful of her. And it’s a lot of fun to see Eliza Dushku get rid of her attitude problem through friendships, a fresh start, and a new athletic expression. But let’s face it, the characters and storyline are secondary to the awesome (meant in the literal sense) cheer routines. The talent, stunt work, rehearsals, and creativity behind the dance numbers are truly a pleasure to watch. I never got tired of them as a little girl, and I doubt I ever will in the decades to come.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. During the cheer performances, sometimes the camera spins in an aerial shot, and that will make you sick. In other words, “Don’t Look, Mom!”
