Broken Arrow (1950)
In the grand tradition of old movies, white actors were given heavy makeup to look like Native Americans in Broken Arrow. Even though this movie is supposedly well-known for it sympathetic portrayal of Apache Indians, it’s not very sympathetic for Jeff Chandler and Debra Paget to pretend they’re tribal members.
All that aside, you can rent this one if you want to see one of James Stewart’s westerns. In his three-pronged career (fast-talking comedies, serious dramas, and westerns), I wasn’t really a fan of most of his Wild West movies. How the West Was Won and Shenandoah are the exceptions, of course. But movies like Broken Arrow, Cheyenne Autumn, Bend in the River, and The Naked Spur just aren’t my cup of tea. Perhaps they were really great in the 1950s, but they didn’t stand the test of time very well. Or perhaps John Wayne and Randolph Scott snatched up all the good scripts before James Stewart could get his hands on them! In any case, Broken Arrow isn’t that great. There is an interracial romance, but since we know it’s just Debra Paget with dark foundation on her face, it’s not very effective. The last ten minutes are suspenseful, but the rest of the movie mostly drags.
