Buchanan Rides Alone (1958)
The synopsis is a bit misleading, as is the title. Randolph Scott doesn’t exactly ride alone in this movie, but maybe he was trying to mix it up a little on the western lot by picking a title that wasn’t the name of a city.
In this one, he stops in a western town all smiles and good cheer; but when he’s innocently involved in a bar fight and someone gets killed, he’s booked as an accessory. Locked up in jail with the man who actually did the killing and admitted it, he’s not really alone, is he? Together, they have to figure out a way to escape before the town lynches them. It’s no easy feat, seeing as how one particular family owns the town, employing brothers as sheriff, hotel manager, bartender, and judge.
This wasn’t my favorite Scottie movie, but it was entertaining. With all the double crosses in the plot, it’ll keep you on your toes. As an interesting twist, Scottie’s signature horse Stardust doesn’t belong to him in this movie, but can still be found onscreen riding beneath someone else. Scottie’s horse has to do more dangerous stunts, and I can’t help but think he didn’t want Stardust, who was aging alongside him, to get hurt.
