Bullets or Ballots (1936)
I feel embarrassed admitting this, but I had no idea what was going on during Bullets or Ballots. It’s just a simple gangster movie! Perhaps I was inordinately tired, or perhaps it’s the most complicated of its genre. It was a hit at the time, so you can give it a shot if you like the old gangster flicks with Edward G. Robinson or Humphrey Bogart. As you would guess, Humph is the heartless villain; his unemotional stare is particularly effective in this movie as he murders people in cold blood. Eddie G is the good guy, or is he? He starts off as a policeman, but then he joins the racketeers and rises the ranks to challenge Humph and Barton MacLane at the top.
On the side, Joan Blondell is another good guy – or is she? She runs a gambling ring with Louise Beavers, so I’m not sure what side of the law she’s on. And is she an item with Eddie G or not? Humph comes onto her, and she doesn’t exactly resist. Is Eddie G secretly working with the cops, and if so, which are the cops and which are the gangsters? Perhaps the cast looked too much alike, or perhaps the screenplay was intentionally confusing. Or, like I said, I might have been too tired.
