Caesar and Cleopatra (1945)
Does anyone want to see Scarlett O’Hara dressed up as Cleopatra? If so, you’ve got to rent the film adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s comedy Caesar and Cleopatra, starring Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh. Miss Leigh is cute as a button and gets to wear beautiful wigs, costumes, and eye makeup – but don’t expect any deviation from her limited talent.
Since this isn’t a drama, and since Cleopatra is written to be incredibly silly and immature, it’s okay that Scarlett O’Hara portrays her. She squeals with delight when she gets her way, she gets a cheap thrill out of ordering her slaves around, and she raises her eyebrow when she wants to appear strong or angry. But, still she’s pretty cute. And speaking of cute; the meet-cute of the two title characters is adorable. Cleopatra has heard many rumors of the Roman people and how wicked they are, especially the incoming visitor Caesar. She tells her fears to a stranger she’s met while hiding among the rocks awaiting Caesar’s arrival. He builds her strength up and teaches her how to greet the imposing man as a queen should, and at the last moment, he admits he is Caesar himself. She’s so happy, she pulls him into a huge hug.
Included in the supporting cast are Leo Genn, Stewart Granger, Flora Robson, Francis L. Sullivan, Cecil Parker, and Michael Rennie. The scenes without Claude Rains’s knowing smirk and Vivien Leigh’s girlish giggle are a little long in the tooth, but if you like Bernard Shaw’s humor and the two leads, you’ll probably like it.
