Call Northside 777 (1948)
Since I love James Stewart, I never mind watching his movies over and over again; but it’s always amusing to me when I accidentally do so. I’ve seen thousands of old movies, and sometimes I forget which ones I’d already seen. It was only a half hour until the end of the movie when I realized I’d already watched Call Northside 777. But it’s very entertaining, so I’d recommend you see it – at least once.
This crime drama features Jimmy as an honest newspaperman. It’s very rare, and only James Stewart could pull it off. However, most of the movie, he comes across as being the defense lawyer rather than just a reporter with nothing to gain. He goes above and beyond, doing research, conducting interviews, and working with the police. Richard Conte is a convicted murderer professing his innocence, and while Jimmy doesn’t believe him at first, he wants to find out the truth once and for all.
If you like Jimmy’s determination to get to the truth and Richard’s sexy, criminal type, you’ll love Anatomy of a Murder. Jimmy plays a defense attorney to Ben Gazzara accused of murdering a man who raped his wife. That’s one of my all-time favorites!
